Flourishing Through Religious Education
At St. Paul's, Religious Education plays an important role in helping children experience "Life in all its Fullness" (John 10:10). Through RE, pupils explore Christianity and other world faiths and worldviews, ask big questions and develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.
We believe that Religious Education should encourage curiosity, respect, reflection and critical thinking. Pupils are given opportunities to explore beliefs, values and traditions whilst considering their own ideas and questions about meaning, purpose and identity.
What do pupils learn?
The school follows the Kent Agreed Syllabus, supported by Rochester Diocesan materials.
Christianity is studied throughout every year group and forms the majority of the curriculum. In addition, pupils learn about:
-
Hinduism in Key Stage 1
-
Judaism in Lower Key Stage 2
-
Islam in Upper Key Stage 2
Through these studies, children develop knowledge of different beliefs and practices whilst learning to appreciate diversity and engage respectfully with different viewpoints.
Asking Big Questions
RE provides opportunities for pupils to explore questions such as:
-
Who am I?
-
Why do people believe in God?
-
What does it mean to live a good life?
-
How should we treat others?
-
What gives people hope in difficult times?
These discussions help children develop empathy, understanding and confidence in expressing their own views respectfully.
RE and Spiritual Development
Religious Education makes a significant contribution to our spirituality curriculum. Through exploring different beliefs, experiences and worldviews, pupils are encouraged to look through Windows, reflect through Mirrors and step through Doors.
Children are given opportunities to experience moments of awe and wonder, consider challenging questions and reflect on their own beliefs and values.
What Our Pupils Say
"RE helps me understand what other people believe and why."
"I like RE because there isn't always one right answer."
"RE helps me think about big questions and listen to other people's opinions."
Religious Education at St. Paul's
RE is taught weekly in every year group and is recognised as an important part of the curriculum. Learning is enhanced through visits, visitors, discussion, reflection and opportunities to encounter different faiths and worldviews.
Our aim is for every child to leave St. Paul's with the knowledge, understanding and respect needed to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world.
Parental Rights
Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and/or Collective Worship.
We would always encourage parents considering withdrawal to speak with the Headteacher so that the aims and content of the curriculum can be discussed and informed decisions can be made.
Where a pupil is withdrawn, appropriate arrangements will be agreed with parents in line with current legislation.
